Refresh your home with easy tips to ‘ditch this for that!’

As fresh as a Florida orange, this lamp from Arteriors ( is sure to add pizzazz and personality to a space.

It’s nearly the end of January. Did you make any design-related New Year’s resolutions, by chance? If so, how are they coming along?  Maybe I can help you make yours happen. Or perhaps I can help you make some resolutions now.

It seems January is the time that my clients (both old and new) crave something different. They want to refresh their homes.

I typically tell them to take a good look around their spaces and check out everything from outdated window treatments (definitely something to ditch) to dull pillows and rugs.

Or maybe it’s time to update with new wall art. Perhaps your lampshades or headboards have seen better days. One of my clients’ master suites features lampshades from when the couple first got married some 20 years ago. That’s okay, if they’re classic and timeless, but if they reek of  say, 1990s hues and shapes, that could be a problem.

I also advise clients to consider Feng Shui notions. You can see my post here on that topic, which addresses everything from lighting to spatial concerns.

As for shelf and tabletop vignettes, keep them simple, with, say, one large vase from a collection.

Add new life to a room with  simple changes. Ditch the old for something new, and your 2013 will be fabulous (at least in the design world). Easy items to update: picture frames, pillows, lampshades, rugs, drapery and  headboards (upholstered is a great way to add color and/or texture).
