I’m Dreaming Of A White … Cottage

SummerAListBlogArtDreaming up a fresh design is part of my process for designing. After meeting with a client initially, I take into consideration their thoughts and insights (and dreams!) and sit quietly thinking about what might work for them. I call this the dream part of the process. Anything goes at this point, as I draw from all my various inspirations and jot down simple concepts, feelings, single words and more.

Then I look into practicalities and lifestyle until arriving at what I believe is the perfect fit.

Today, though, the dream I’m having is for myself — and my family. As we just breezed past the Fourth of July, I’m thinking about how summer comes and goes in a flick of the eye … quick, like a lightning bug’s spark! So how to hold on to summer? With thoughts of my dream cottage, of course! And what would it include? (or should I say, will it include?) The dream words that define my idyllic getaway? Rustic, white, splash, open, texture, unexpected and glow. Yes, this is a place that would resonate with all of that and then some.

Check out my brand-new Summer A List here for my summer-cottage inspirations. And below, I’ve listed more of my favorite cottage must-haves to date!

Rustic —Exposed white rafters or beams.

White — Lots of fresh whites, in the name of the aforementioned exposed beams, as well as white marble (like the table shown here with a rustic, reclaimed base, from Four Hands and available through AK Design and Accents)

Splash — Color comes in splashes, here and there, like a vintage-style red barn light (also shown here) in the kitchen.

Open — Everything is open and airy, right down to kitchen shelving above a farm-style sink.

Texture — What, I ask you, is a cottage without jute? Jaipur jute rugs — and their textured, ropy, nautical, sand-hued beauty (seen here) — are a must!

Harry Bertoia chair — the unexpected!

Harry Bertoia chair — the unexpected!

Unexpected —
I’d have to have modern dining chairs, like the white wire chair by Harry Bertoia shown at left, to add an unexpected stylish mix.

Glow — What is more ocean-y than the whitewashed rattan hurricanes from Serena and Lily? Savvy designers have updated S&L’s outdoor classic hurricanes with a touch of leather (in the handle) and recycled glass, just as captivating as sea-glass itself.

Sound dreamy enough? Keep reading and one of these posts may showcase my own real-but-dreamy cottage getaway!
